Apps employ various strategies to curb usage: some strip phones of colour through grayscale filters, others block entire applications, and still others transform modern smartphones into minimalist devices resembling feature phones of decades past. Some users willing to invest premium prices turn to physical hardware solutions. The Brick, a tangible device that blocks apps when tapped against a phone, costs US$59 and represents the growing market for friction-based interventions.
Yet despite these innovations, meaningful screen time reduction remains elusive for most people. The challenge isn't new—it's simply amplified. Ulrik Lyngs, who founded the Centre for Digital Experiences and Wellbeing at a major research institution, draws an unexpected parallel to ancient philosophy. Early religious texts wrestled with the contradiction between wanting to act virtuously and lacking the willpower to follow through.
