The "1 NADI, 1 Prompt Engineer" programme represents a concerted effort to democratise high-skill technical education beyond urban centres, addressing both workforce shortages and regional economic disparity. Dr Mohd Arif Adenan, who heads the National Information Dissemination Centre at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, outlined the ambitious scope of the initiative during an interview at MCMC headquarters in Cyberjaya.
At its core, the programme tackles a fundamental barrier to technology adoption in Malaysia's less developed regions: the assumption that pursuing lucrative tech careers requires migration to Kuala Lumpur or other metropolitan hubs. By offering intensive, certification-backed AI training at no cost, NADI is testing whether geographic isolation can be overcome through digital infrastructure and remote work opportunities. The curriculum is structured around prompt engineering, a practical AI skill that has emerged as increasingly valuable across industries seeking to integrate large language models into their operations. Partnerships with Google, Multimedia University and MIMOS Academy lend credibility and industry relevance to the certification, distinguishing this from generic online courses.
The programme's design reflects shifting labour market realities across Southeast Asia. Rather than assuming workers must physically relocate to find employment, NADI recognises that project-based and task-oriented work can be executed from anywhere with reliable internet connectivity. A prompt engineer in Pulau Banggi, Sabah, for instance, can bid for contracts with firms nationwide or internationally, generating income without abandoning family, community ties or the lower cost of living that characterises rural Malaysia. This model potentially offers a pathway for brain retention, allowing talented individuals to contribute economically to their home regions rather than feeding a one-directional migration to urban centres.
The participant profile for the initiative skews younger, with the programme primarily targeting individuals aged 40 and below, though MCMC has pragmatically kept doors open for older learners who demonstrate genuine technological appetite. This inclusive approach acknowledges that motivation and commitment matter as much as age in determining success in intensive technical training. The broader NADI ecosystem has already demonstrated tangible impact through its NADI Mahir (Skilled) initiative, which has trained approximately 27,000 participants since its inception last year across diverse skill sets including photography, sewing, cooking, gadget repair and smart farming. These programmes are not merely about skill transfer; they represent attempts to create sustainable income streams for marginalised populations, particularly in rural areas where formal employment opportunities are limited. The sewing programme exemplifies this approach, with 120 alumni collectively producing and selling around 3,000 school uniforms to local communities last year, demonstrating that grassroots-level artisanal production can meet real market demand.
Financial inclusion forms another critical pillar of the NADI strategy. Recognising that many participants lack access to capital or have poor credit histories, NADI facilitates connections between trained entrepreneurs and institutions like TEKUN Nasional and Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia, which offer microfinance and small business loans. Equally important is the effort to instil financial discipline and planning rather than encouraging unsustainable debt. The school uniform example is instructive: NADI structured an arrangement allowing families to make staggered payments before collection, eliminating the need for high-interest loans or informal borrowing common in rural areas. This approach educates communities about cash flow management and the value of saving, shifting mindsets around financial planning.
Individual success stories illustrate the programme's human impact. Nurul Syuhada Rashidi, a single mother from Banting in Selangor, has rebuilt economic stability through sewing work, now earning RM900 monthly—a meaningful sum in the context of rural household budgets. Similarly, Nurul Aini Hayati Rashidi, at just 23 years old, generates RM1,400 monthly from home-based sewing, while Rosnaniza Hasnan in Pekan, Pahang, supplements her family income with RM450 monthly to support her child's university education. Nurul Huda Awang's experience highlights an additional benefit: the RM200-400 monthly income allows her to purchase materials to sew her own children's uniforms, reducing back-to-school expenses that often strain rural household budgets.
These narratives reveal a programme designed not merely to transfer skills but to restore agency and dignity to individuals facing economic precarity. For single mothers, young adults and older workers displaced from traditional sectors, structured skills training combined with genuine income opportunities represents transformative opportunity.
