The judge overseeing Najib Razak's 1MDB trial has determined that the former Prime Minister was unrepentant throughout proceedings and repeatedly attributed fault elsewhere, according to court findings delivered in the landmark case.
During his judgment, the trial judge characterised Najib's conduct as an abuse of the extensive authority he wielded as leader of the nation. The court found that the former premier exploited his position to orchestrate what it described as one of the most significant financial corruption and money laundering operations in global history.
Najib's behaviour in the courtroom reflected a consistent pattern of evading personal accountability. Rather than acknowledge wrongdoing, the former leader systematically attempted to place responsibility on subordinates and circumstances beyond his control. The judge noted this defensive posture throughout the legal proceedings.
The 1MDB scandal centred on the misappropriation of billions of ringgit from the state development fund. The trial highlighted how Najib's privileged position as Prime Minister allowed him to manipulate systems and personnel to facilitate the theft and subsequent laundering of the stolen funds across international financial networks.
