Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has called on all parties, particularly those in the civil service, to exercise restraint when making public statements and to avoid using discourteous language. Speaking in Putrajaya on June 15, she emphasised the need for measured communication across all platforms and at all times.
Teo's guidance specifically highlighted the importance of steering clear of matters touching on race, religion and royalty (3R). She stressed that such caution should extend beyond election periods to become standard practice in government communications. Her remarks came after she officiated an industry dialogue on journalism and responsibility.
The minister's comments were directed at the recent controversy surrounding Mohd Hisyamuddin Ghazali, director-general of the Department of Community Communications (J-KOM). Mohd Hisyamuddin, who took office on June 9 following the departure of Datuk Ismail Yusop, has faced criticism over the tone and content of his public communications since his appointment.
Teo indicated she had not yet arranged a personal meeting with Mohd Hisyamuddin to discuss the matter directly. However, she confirmed her intention to convey these expectations through appropriate channels, underscoring the government's commitment to maintaining professional standards in official communications.
